Children's Ministry at CTR

Children’s Ministry

We see children as participating members of the body of Christ, people who are just as able (if not more so) to relate to God as any adult; in fact, we can only know God rightly by becoming like a child.  While the home is usually the primary place of formation for a child, as a parish we seek to offer children special opportunities of growth and formation that are appropriate to their specific physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Please join our Parents group on Facebook to connect with other parents at CTR. Feel free to share resources, ask each other questions, start a discussion, request prayer, or simply invite others to join you and your children on an adventure.

Lastly, be sure to grab your copy of the Parent’s Survival Guide. This valuable PDF details our children’s schedule for each Sunday morning, as well as the ministries offered, and survival tips. Download your copy here.

The Nursery

We provide child care in our sunny nursery during the 9:00 and 11:00 Sunday services and during most special liturgies and events. The CTR nursery is open to children from birth through age 3 (up to age 4). However, if a 3 year old child is ready to move into Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, this is encouraged.

We have wonderfully loving, dedicated volunteers who take care of the children each week. Our volunteers have all taken the SafeChurch training program and had a background check. Volunteers are welcome to join the team. Generally, each team member is scheduled one Sunday per month. Volunteers must complete an application form along with the state and national required form.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is an approach to Christian Formation in which children and their teachers listen to God together and experience God’s gift of love through multi-sensory Scripture presentations, contemplative work, and times of prayer. CGS is rooted in the Bible and the Liturgy of the Church. Children gather in a room specially prepared for them called an “atrium,” which contains hands-on materials that the children can work with and use, such as a model altar and dioramas of Jesus’ life. They also gather around a prayer table each week to listen and talk to God. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is offered to children ages 3-12 during the 9:00 and 11:00 AM services, and the 10:00 AM Children’s Formation Hour:

  • 9:00 AM — During the sermon, children of all ages are invited to gather in the Baptistery for a time of prayer, scripture, and song.
  • 10:00 AM — Children’s Formation Hour: Children ages 3-5 and 9-12 meet in the Sheepfold, our temporary classroom trailer. Children ages 6-8 meet on the Parish Hall stage.
  • 11:00 AM — At the singing of the Gloria, children depart for Catechesis in procession, following the Cross. Children ages 3-5 go left to the Sheepfold; children ages 6+ go right to the Parish Hall. They return during the Offertory for Holy Communion.
